The Study of Growth of the Larynx and Trachea in Korean Infants

Abstract
The author carried out measurements of the various portions of the thyroid cartilage in 145 Korean infants (male 70, female 75), aged I month to 12 months and observed the growing tendency of each part of the cartilage. The author also observed the epiglottic cartilage in 155 Korean infants (male 72, female 83), aged 1 month to 12 months.
The following conclusions were reached:
1. In the height of each part of the thyroid cartilage, the anterior part of the lamina is the highest according to age, and the posterior part is next in order. The anterior margin of the lamina is higher than the posterior margin at the age of I month, but both become almost equal in height at the age of 12 months, because of more rapid growing rate of the former.
2. The angle of the superior thyroid notch and anterior angle of the thyroid lamina are almost 90 degree according to age in both sexes. These are considerably bigger than those of adult.
3. The inclination of the superior cornu shows no difference in both sexes in all ages and also there is no difference from that of adult.
4. The upper mouth of the cricoid cartilage is elliptical in shape in all ages. On the other hand, the lower mouth of the cricoid cartilage is round in shape in all ages.
5. Type "d" epiglottis (infantile type) is seen most frequently, in 42 males (58.3%) and 40 females (¢¥55.4%) of the total cases. Type "c" epiglottis (omega type) is seen next in order, in 16 males (22.2%) and 25 females (30. 1%). Type "a" and "b" are seldom seen.
